SAT Prep Boot Camps

BECOLLEGEWISE 1 & 2 DAY SAT PREP BOOT CAMPS

The SAT boot camps are designed to meet the requests of students who cannot attend the regular 4 week prep classes due to sports, academic commitments, work or other extra-curricular activities.
The 1 day boot camp (8 am-5 pm) consists of a full length practice test (8 - noon), an hour break for lunch and then 4 hours of instruction: 2 hours of English and 2 hours of math. The one day boot camp to prep for the Nov. 5th SAT Test will be held of Oct. 30th (Sunday) from 8 - 5 pm. The one day boot camp to prep for the Dec. SAT will be held on the Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend, Nov. 27th
The 2 day boot camp (8 am-5 pm) has a practice test each morning and one afternoon has math and the other has English instruction. A 2 day boot camp will be held on Jan 14th and 15th to prep for the Jan SAT
Boot camps will be held at the Comfort Inn (University Suite), 1590 University Ave., Riverside (next to UCR)

The seventh annual Riverside College and Career Fair will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Riverside Convention Center, 3443 Orange St.

Want free money for college? Find out about financial aid.
- Discover the best college for your career goals and education plans.
- Get career advice from friendly local business representatives.
- Get tips to succeed in your first job interview.
- Find out which careers will be hot in the future.

High school students and their parents can explore a variety of career and college opportunities. More than 100 educational institutions, businesses and community organizations are expected to offer information and answer questions about educational and career pathways.

Workshops will focus on topics such as college admissions requirements; information about the University of California and California State University systems and private colleges; how to make a good impression at a job interview; and careers of the future. Some workshops will be offered in both Spanish and English.

Students in ninth through 11th grades who attend will have the chance to win a computer system. Twelfth-graders who attend will have the opportunity to win partial college scholarships.

The free event is sponsored by Bank of America, the Greater Riverside Chambers of Commerce Business Education Partnership, city of Riverside, Riverside County Workforce Investment Board, Riverside Convention Center, and the Riverside, Alvord and Jurupa Unified school districts.

This site has been used by over 77 million users worldwide. It's received a lot of acclaim for it's quality of instruction and easy to understand tutorials. Students can play, pause and replay the videos as many times as they like in order to grasp the material. Math runs through calculus.

With a library of over 2,400 videos covering everything from arithmetic to physics, finance, and history and 180 practice exercises, Khan Academy is on a mission to help you learn what you want, when you want, at your own pace.

Guide to Success in Difficult Classes

Due to the size of our school it is impossible to allow teacher requests for students’ schedules. Often times students come into the guidance office and request a teacher change “because they don’t ‘get’ the way that teacher teaches.” Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate these class changes.

What to do if you are struggling in a class:

1. The first thing a student needs to do is meet with the teacher—one on one. Schedule an appointment with the teacher after class. Complaining to a teacher during class is not the same as sitting down and having a mature conversation with the instructor. Tell the teacher why you are struggling—be specific. Also tell them what your goals are for the class and why that is important to you.

2. Attend tutoring. LSHS offers various ways to get assistance:
• Go to your teacher during tutorial period.
• Get assistance from Bright Club Tutors during tutorial period.
• Attend the Homework Zone in the library Monday –Thursday from 3-4:30.
• Attend tutoring in the library on Thursday mornings 7:30-8:30.

3. Have your parents contact the teacher. If you are still struggling in this class, it’s important to have your parents make contact with the teacher. If necessary, set up a parent/teacher conference. Parent/teacher communication is very important to student success.

4. Utilize the Parent Portal. If you do not have access to view your grades online, have your parent contact your counselor to help set it up. Keeping up with your grades allows you and your parents to identify problems with your classes before your grade suffers too much.

If you have followed these guidelines and are still struggling, contact the Guidance office to set up a Parent/Teacher/Administrator meeting.

Young people in all socio-economic groups have college aspirations. In fact, eight out of 10 expect to attain a bachelor's degree or higher, according to the U.S. Department of Education. But despite their aspirations, low-income students and those who are the first in their families to pursue higher education are severely underrepresented on college campuses. Studies show these students often lack the guidance they need to prepare for postsecondary education.

In order to turn these students' college dreams into action-oriented goals, the American Council on Education, Lumina Foundation for Education and the Ad Council launched the KnowHow2GO campaign in January 2007. This multiyear, multimedia effort includes television, radio and outdoor public service advertisements (PSAs) that encourage 8th through 10th graders to prepare for college using four simple steps.

Applications for the 2012 UC Berkeley school year will be available soon, so here are some key points for students to position themselves as potential Cal prospects:
• Students must complete 15 core classes to be eligible for admission. At least seven of them must be taken in their last two years of high school, and eleven need to be taken prior to senior year. They include 4 years of English, 3 years of Mathematics, 2 years of Foreign Language, History, and Laboratory Science, and 1 year of College-Prep Electives and Visual/Performing Arts.
• UC Berkeley accepts test scores from both the ACT and SAT. All testing must be completed by December of the year prior to the desired semester of admission (for example, when applying for fall 2012, tests must be completed by December 2011).
• A diversity of experiences and perspectives is highly valued at UC Berkeley. Likewise, more out-of-state students are being enrolled than ever. According to a 2010 report from the university, there was a 20% combined increase of out-of-state and international students, with projections of even larger out-of-state student admissions for the upcoming school year.
• The deadline to apply for the Fall 2012 semester is November 30th. Applications are available on October 1st. Students can directly apply online by clicking here.

In order to motivate our students to perform their absolute BEST on the upcoming California Standardized Testing, our "core" subject departments are offering the following incentives. Since there will be no summer school for grades 9-11, this incentive will be extremely helpful for those students needing to make up a failed class in summer school.

Department Incentives 10-11 STAR Testing In the fall, teachers will be given a list of students who are eligible for a grade change. Teachers will then complete the list and submit grade changes. All changes must be submitted by the end of first semester.

A CST score of “Proficient” (4): Student’s grade will be raised one letter grade for either 1st or 2nd semester. The student has the choice.

March Tasks for Financial Aid Applicants
Verify that all the data on the SAR (Student Aid Report) is accurate. Submit updates at www.fafsa.gov.
Revise student and parent SAR data with final 1040 tax numbers, if necessary.
Check with the campus financial aid office to make sure that all relevant application paperwork is complete. Students may be requested to submit tax forms for verification purposes.
Students should narrow down their school choices, visit campus sites and talk to current students while on campus. Dorm dining halls and campus café’s are great places to ask about the school.
Students should be on the lookout for acceptance letters.
Visit www.collegeboard.org to find information on Advanced Placement (AP) exams. 2011 AP Exams will be administered over two weeks in May, from May 2 through 6 and May 9 through 13, 2011.
College bound students should start looking for summer jobs and, if possible, try to get work or volunteer in a field related to their study interest to determine the right career choice.

WebGrants for Students (WGS)
After filing the FAFSA, students should establish a WebGrants for Students (WGS) account.

Using WGS, students can see their Cal Grant application status, confirm and update their postal and e-mail addresses, provide the required high school graduation confirmation once they graduate and change their college of attendance.

WGS can be accessed 24/7 and is an easy and efficient way for students to stay on top of their application and, if awarded, their Cal Grant award.

To establish a WGS account, students should go to www.webgrants4students.org and follow the instructions!

2011 Cash for College Workshop Registration
Registration for 2011 Cash for College workshops has begun. More than 400 workshops have already registered. To register, please visit www.calgrants.org.
A listing of registered workshops can be found at www.calgrants.org/workshops. Students can join us on Facebook and receive workshop updates and reminders in addition to important financial aid information.
The Commission is excited to announce Cash for College will continue to offer $1,000 incentive scholarships per qualifying workshop. The 2011 Cash for College scholarships are available through a new partnership between the Commission and ECMC, designated by the federal government to assume responsibility for the California Federal Family Educational Loan Program (FFEL) Program.
The scholarship program will continue to require high school seniors to attend a Cash for College workshop, complete an exit survey, and submit the FAFSA and a verified Cal Grant GPA by the March 2 application deadline. AB 540 eligible high school seniors attending workshops are also eligible to participate in the scholarship program. If selected, AB 540 students are required to submit a copy of their AB 540 Affidavit.

Substance Abuse and Teenagers Workshop

As you may or may not already know, many of our high school and middle school students face the pressure of consuming or dealing popular drugs like marijuana, oxicotton, or extacy. This workshop will bring awareness to both parent and students about the popularity, dangers, and consequences of such common drugs.

This workshop will be held on Wednesday December 8th from 6-7pm. It will be held on the Norte Vista High School campus in the multipurpose room. Refreshments and babysitting will be provided.

This presentation will be given by MFI Recovery Center in both Spanish and English.

PSAT Test on sale

The PSAT test is now on sale in the activities office. The cost is $15 and is on a first come first serve basis. The test will be administered on Saturday, October 16th.

A little bit about the PSAT:
The PSAT/NMSQT is a comprehensive, standardized assessment administered at schools each October. The test provides an opportunity for you and your students to begin addressing areas where they may need extra attention as they prepare for life beyond high school.

Testing time
The PSAT/NMSQT is 2 hours and 10 minutes long, plus approximately 35 minutes of administrative duties.

Assessing skills
The PSAT/NMSQT measures:

Reading, math reasoning, and writing skills that are important for successful academic performance in college
Knowledge and skills developed through years of study in a wide range of courses as well as through experiences outside the classroom
Critical thinking—the ability to reason with facts and concepts, rather than the ability to recall and recite them
Test sections
The PSAT/NMSQT has five sections:

Two 25-minute critical reading sections
Two 25-minute math sections
One 30-minute writing skills section
Scoring
Scores for each section—critical reading, math, and writing—are on a 20-to-80 point scale
Correct answer = 1 point

10th Grade Guidance Presentation

The Counselors administered a Career Interest Inventory test to all of the 10th graders through their history class. We explained the importance of exploring their options in finding that good job. However finding that good job requires information and preparation. The preparation comes from taking the right classes so you are qualified for that good job. With the information that the students provide to us from the Career Interest Inventory test, we will give them a four year plan/career pathway that they can use in a couple of weeks when they pick their classes for next year.

We will follow up with a presentation covering the industry sectors and possible careers on February 18th in the Performing Arts Building (PAB). At the presentation, the sophomores will be given a copy of their industry sector 4 year high school plan with suggested college and career pathways. Sophomores pre-register for classes on February 23/24 through their English classes.

This unit will meet parts of Standard A, B and C under Career Development of the American School Counselor Association National Standards.

2nd Semester Schedules

Students - your second semester schedules will be handed out on Monday, December 14th in your 3rd period class. If find something incorrect on your schedule, counselors will be available on Tuesday, December 15th, Wednesday, December 16th and Thursday December 17th from 11:40 - 3:30. We will also be available on Friday, December 18th from 7:30am - 2:30pm.

If by chance you misplace your schedule over winter break, we now have the Aeries Portal where you can log on and print your schedule out from there. Parents were sent home a letter explaining how to access this site and how to log in.

1st Semester FINALS

1st semester finals will be held on Tuesday December 15th, Wednesday December 16th and Thursday December 17th. Each of these days will be a minimum day where students will be released at 11:45 unless they have a 0 or 7th period. Please refer to your student handbook or the time schedule listed below:

1st Semester Ends - December 17th

Our 1st semester has a brand new end date this year. We will now end 1st semester BEFORE we go on winter break. Thursday, December 17th will mark the end of the 1st semester. Friday will be a non student day however teachers and counselors will be on campus for a teacher work day.

UC/Cal State Application DEADLINE

Attention all students applying to a Cal State University or a University of California school!!!! The application deadline in Monday November 30th. Please do not wait until the last minute. If you have any questions, please see your counselor in the guidance office ASAP.

PARENT CONFERENCE NIGHT

On Thursday October 15th, La Sierra High School will be having Parent Conference night. It will begin at 4:30pm and end at 8pm. The Guidance Office will also be showing their grade level PowerPoint presentations. We hope to see all of you there!
